{"id":4170,"date":"2015-01-08T11:08:25","date_gmt":"2015-01-08T17:08:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/royceeddington.com\/?p=4170"},"modified":"2015-01-08T11:08:25","modified_gmt":"2015-01-08T17:08:25","slug":"niaid-wants-to-see-if-a-parasite-alleviates-ulcerative-colitis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/royceeddington.com\/?p=4170","title":{"rendered":"NIAID wants to see if a parasite alleviates Ulcerative Colitis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s something you don&#8217;t hear everyday&#8230; a parasite might be good for you!<\/p>\n<p>The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) just posted a clinical trial notice for assessing &#8220;Trichuris Suis Ova Treatment in Left-sided Ulcerative Colitis&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the little TSO medical assistant right here&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trichuris_suis\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/d\/df\/Trichuris_Suis.jpg\/220px-Trichuris_Suis.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now before you go AAAAAAAA NOT IN MY BODY YOU DON&#8217;T, the NIAID has the idea that introducing a tiny parasitic worm into a patient that suffers from Ulcerative Colitis will \u201cdistract the immune system so that it fights the worm rather than targeting the colon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that this parasite is a lightweight in the &#8220;invading alien&#8221; category and can be completely nuked with some basic meds.<\/p>\n<p>The VERY good news is that Trichuris Suis Ova has already been found to have a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trichuris_suis\">&#8220;significant and long lasting improvements in active Crohn&#8217;s disease&#8221;<\/a>, and this test is the first big step in making this treatment go mainstream.<\/p>\n<p>Ulcerative Colitis, to use non-medical terms, sucks rocks. It&#8217;s a nasty <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ulcerative_colitis\">&#8220;form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)&#8230; that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores. The main symptom of active disease is usually constant diarrhea mixed with blood, of gradual onset.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The clinical trial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT01953354?term=NCT01953354&amp;rank=1\">can be found on clinicaltrials.gov<\/a> (part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health) and the trial will be active in&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>California<\/li>\n<li>Connecticut<\/li>\n<li>Florida<\/li>\n<li>Illinois<\/li>\n<li>Iowa<\/li>\n<li>Maryland<\/li>\n<li>Massachusetts<\/li>\n<li>Minnesota<\/li>\n<li>New York<\/li>\n<li>North Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Ohio<\/li>\n<li>Pennsylvania<\/li>\n<li>Tennessee<\/li>\n<li>Texas<\/li>\n<li>Washington<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s something you don&#8217;t hear everyday&#8230; a parasite might be good for you!
